- Black Canary and Cassandra Cain vow to protect Barbara Gordon, ensuring that nobody is going to kill Barbara as long as she’s protected by them.
Warning! Contains Spoilers For Birds of Prey #6!
The Birds of Prey are back, but missing one iconic member. Many fans have pointed this out, and DC has finally provided an answer as to why this member was missing: every time Barbara Gordon’s Batgirl joined this iteration of the team, she’d end up dead. Now, the Birds of Prey are setting out to find out who’s trying to kill Barbara, and stop them once and for all.
Birds of Prey #6 – written by Kelly Thompson, with art by Leonardo Romero, color by Jordie Bellaire, and lettering by Clayton Cowles – finds the team enjoying some much-needed relaxation and celebration after rescuing Dinah’s sister Sin from the Amazons, when Black Canary is confronted by Barbara Gordon, who questions why she wasn’t asked to help, something fans of the team have been asking as well.
As it turns out, the reason Barbara Gordon wasn’t in this Birds of Prey iteration is because every time she joined for this particular mission, she wound up dead, something Canary refused to let happen.

Maps Mizoguchi Witnessed Batgirl’s Death Over & Over
Barbara Gordon was the Birds of Prey’s founding member, which made her absence from the start of the new volume particularly unusual. In Birds of Prey #7, time traveler Maps Mizoguchi revealed why: every time Babs joined this mission, both she and Sin died. Eventually, after eleven failed attempts to save both Babs and Sin, Black Canary asked Maps to make sure Babs didn’t join the team. This perfectly leads into the Birds of Prey’s next story arc, which involves discovering why Barbara kept getting killed, as it appears someone is manipulating the time stream to make sure it happens.
Barbara Gordon has long been one of DC’s most influential heroes. When Batgirl was Oracle, she was responsible for supplying information to the entire hero community of the DC Universe. She was an immensely powerful and important hero. With her help, the heroes managed to put away dozens of villains, who otherwise could’ve escaped. It’s not unreasonable to say that Barbara Gordon likely has hundreds of enemies; now one of them has begun attacking her through the time stream. With someone hellbent on making sure Barbara dies, there’s only one team she can turn to for safety.
Black Canary Swears To Keep Barbara Gordon Alive
The Birds of Prey are assembling yet another new team, and this new team has the single goal of protecting Barbara Gordon. It’s unclear exactly who is seeking to kill Barbara, but one villain wants this former Batgirl dead, and will do anything to succeed. Both Black Canary and Cassandra Cain promise that they will not allow this to happen. Barbara Gordon will be a member of this new team, but she will also be their next, most important mission yet. As Black Canary herself promisesd, “Nobody is killing Batgirl on our ******* watch.”
