- The cast and crew of Argylle are dedicated to preserving the mystery behind the true identity of author Elly Conway, even though some have knowledge of who it might be.
- Despite speculation that the book was written by either Matthew Vaughn or Taylor Swift, both ideas have been debunked, with Vaughn insisting that there is a real and talented writer behind the novel.
- Attendees of early screenings have confirmed that no revelation of Conway’s identity occurs, indicating that the mystery will likely be maintained until the film’s wide release.
Argylle‘s cast and crew tease the true identity of author Elly Conway, though most are very dedicated to preserving the mystery. When the Matthew Vaughn-directed spy comedy was announced, viewers were perplexed when it claimed to be based on an unpublished book by debut author Conway. Such a deal for an unknown author for an unpublished book is unheard of. In a meta twist, the Argylle trailer confirmed that Conway is the in-universe author of the book as well. Although Conway has largely remained anonymous, the Argylle book is real, having been published on January 9.
In an interview with Variety, the cast of Argylle addressed the mystery of the true author behind the book. Henry Cavill appeared to know the identity but refused to reveal anything per Vaughn’s wishes, while Bryan Cranston played coy about what he knew, claiming he couldn’t rule out the rumor that Taylor Swift wrote it. Meanwhile, John Cena and film composer Lorne Balfe claimed not to be privy to the author’s identity. Check out their statements below:
Cavill: Afraid I can’t tell you, at least not without killing you. If I told you, I’d be persona non grata, and I like Matthew. It was something he was very particular about. We wanted to make sure that the mystery was maintained, because she wants the same thing.
Cranston: It’s very real. I can’t confirm or deny the rumors about Ms. Swift. I wouldn’t put it past her, she’s certainly capable of writing a novel or several novels. But I really shouldn’t say any more.
Cena: I don’t know, but I think it’s wonderful that a movie based on espionage with the tag line ‘the greater the spy the bigger the lie’ has espionage and misdirection on the way to the release.
Balfe: Honestly, I don’t know who she is. I know that. I know that he [Vaughn] didn’t [write it].
What We Know About Argylle’s Mystery Author
The responses from the cast and crew of Argylle suggest that the mystery might be more significant than some initially assumed. If their responses were honest, it’s surprising that even those directly involved in the film wouldn’t know the identity of the book’s author. A practical theory was that Vaughn or screenwriter Jason Fuchs simply wrote a novelization of the movie. However, it seems unlikely they would go to such great lengths to hide this or manage to keep it from the cast and crew. Additionally, Vaughn was the one suspect that Balfe was adamant about not writing the book.
Matthew Vaughn & Samuel L. Jackson On Argylle’s Personal Character Touches
Argylle director Matthew Vaughn and star Samuel L. Jackson discuss creating character visuals and working with stunt coordinator Bradley James Allen.
Meanwhile, Vaughn personally ruled out the theory that Swift wrote the book behind Argylle. This was one of the few fan theories that gained traction, primarily due to Swift’s enormous star power. There was never much basis for the theory, though internet users did manage to round up a few coincidences, such as Conway’s first Instagram post being published on Swift’s birthday. After his daughter fell for the theory, Vaughn denied Swift wrote the book, though he has continued to insist there is a real and talented writer behind Argylle.
The likeliest theory is that an established author wrote Argylle, with two plausible suspects being identified as Tammy Cohen and Terry Hayes. One consultant on the film claimed someone named Tamar Cohen wrote the book, a name Cohen has published under, in addition to the pseudonym Rachel Rhys. Meanwhile, Hayes may have a connection to Vaughn as the director was once allegedly set to adapt Hayes’s novel I Am Pilgrim. For now, attendees of early screenings of Argylle confirmed no revelation of Conway’s identity occurred, meaning the mystery will likely remain until its wide release.
