Essential Tips For Staying Cool In Scorching NYC

July 9, 2024

By Mark Levine

With a week of soaring temperatures and high humidity on the horizon, it’s crucial to stay cool, care for your neighbors, and avoid the worst of the heat.

Here are some vital tips to help you manage:

  1. Find a Cooling Center: Use the Cooling Center Finder or contact 311 (212-639-9675 for Video Relay Service or TTY: 212-504-4115) to locate an open cooling center near you. Cooling centers that allow pets feature a paw icon, but service animals are welcome at all locations.
  2. Explore Cool It! NYC: Check out the Cool It! NYC map to find pools, spray showers, water fountains, and shady spots around the city.
  3. Stay Informed: Visit NYC’s Beat the Heat website for useful information and updates on how to cope with the heat.
  4. Understand Heat Vulnerability: Learn about the heat vulnerability in your neighborhood with the NYC Heat Vulnerability Index to better prepare and protect yourself.
  5. Recognize Heat Illness Signs: Be aware of the signs of heat illness, including hot/dry skin, trouble breathing, rapid heartbeat, confusion, disorientation, dizziness, and nausea/vomiting. If you or someone else experiences these symptoms, call 911 immediately.
  6. Check on Your Neighbors: During high heat, especially watch out for seniors, young children, or people with disabilities. Keep in touch by phone at least twice a day on extra hot days to ensure their well-being.
  7. Report Power Outages: If your power goes out, report the outage or check power restoration updates at conEd.com/reportoutage or call 1-800-75-CONED (1-800-752-6633).

Stay cool and safe, and let’s look out for each other during this heatwave!
