- Helen Slater, former Supergirl actress, congratulates Milly Alcock on being cast as Supergirl in James Gunn’s DC Universe.
- Alcock is set to appear as Kara Zor-El in Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow in the DC Universe.
- Slater expresses her excitement for Alcock’s performance and believes she will be amazing in the role.
Supergirl star Helen Slater passes the torch of the Girl of Steel to Milly Alcock who is set to appear as Kara Zor-El in James Gunn’s DC Universe. With Gunn’s DC Universe actively being worked on, Superman: Legacy is the first movie that is going into production this year. However, David Corenswet’s Superman won’t be the only Kryptonian featured in Chapter 1, “Gods and Monsters,” as DC Studios have also found their new Supergirl.
Now that Alcock has been officially cast in the DC Universe as Kara in the Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow movie, one of the former Supergirl actresses has taken to social media to congratulate her, with Slater being the first one to share a sweet message on Instagram.
With 2024 marking exactly 40 years since Slater’s Supergirl movie was released in theaters, the actress congratulated “the luminous Milly Alcock, the next Supergirl,” while adding that “you will be AMAZING!” Slater actually reprized her version of Supergirl in 2023 during the multiverse sequence as a cameo in The Flash movie while being de-aged alongside a CGI Christopher Reeve’s Superman, making the proverbial passing of the torch to Alcock all the more poignant.

Since first appearing in live-action in 1984, Supergirl’s suits have undergone several changes, some for the better, and others for the worse.
How Is The DC Universe Setting Up The New Supergirl?
When Alcock was initially cast as Kara, it was being reported that Supergirl was going to make her DC Universe debut in Gunn’s Superman: Legacy. While Gunn has recently commented about Supergirl’s rumored appearance in Superman: Legacy, it was to express that he never said she was in the film. However, this comment notably isn’t a debunking of the idea of Supergirl appearing in the movie either, and it would make sense to include her in this installment – though even if she is absent, Clark Kent’s story will inherently also set up her own, since the cousins are familiarly tied.
Depending on what happens to her in Superman: Legacy, the film might be directly setting up Kara for Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow. Penned by Ana Nogueira, Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow will be an adaptation of the comic book series by Tom King and Bilquis Evely, taking place in space. King is also attached to Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow as a DC Universe architect, as he is involved heavily with Gunn and DC Studios’ writing team.
With Supergirl cast, the next step for Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow is to find a director for the movie, with candidates likely to emerge in the near future.
Time will tell if other Supergirl actresses will chime in about Alcock’s casting, but it is still wonderful to see the first cinematic Girl of Steel show her support for the next generation. With this also being the first time a DC movie franchise has both Superman and Supergirl at the same time together, it will be fun to see Clark and Kara’s cousin dynamic on the big screen. Hopefully, more news on Supergirl and her adventures in the DC Universe will emerge sooner rather than later.
