- The Bear’s genre debate can be resolved by focusing on Neil Fak in season 3.
- Fak is a consistently comedic character who brings humor to The Bear and balances out its heavier subject matter.
- An episode centered on Fak and his family in season 3 could be an opportunity to give Fak more of a character arc and boost The Bear’s comedy levels.
There’s long been debate about whether The Bear falls into the drama or comedy genre of television, but season 3 can solve this issue by focusing more on one specific character. After following up its critically acclaimed first season with an even more impressive season 2, it’s no surprise that The Bear swept the categories at all the major awards shows this year. The Bear won nearly every award it was nominated for, including Best Comedy Series at the Emmys, Golden Globes, and the Critics’ Choice Awards.
While The Bear‘s nominations at the other 2024 award shows were for season 2, because the Emmys were supposed to air in September 2023 but got rescheduled due to the Hollywood strikes, the Emmy nominations for The Bear were for season 1 (released June 23, 2022).
However, the categorization of The Bear as a comedy at awards shows has caused some confusion among viewers. While it certainly has its comedic moments, many consider The Bear to be a drama given the heavy subject matter that the show explores, such as substance abuse, mental illness, familial trauma, and financial struggles. In order to solve The Bear‘s genre debate and prove that the series leans more towards comedy, The Bear season 3 should give one particularly humorous character more screen time.
The Bear Season 3 Can Solve The Show’s Genre Debate By Focusing On Fak
Fak is one of the more naturally comedic characters in The Bear
The Bear could justify its genre categorization as a comedy by focusing more on Neil Fak in season 3. Referred to almost exclusively by his last name, Fak is a supporting character played by real-life chef Matty Matheson on The Bear. He is the mechanic at the now-titular restaurant, formerly The Beef, and has been a close friend and honorary member of the Berzatto family on The Bear since childhood. He is often butting heads with Richie (Ebon Moss-Bachrach) a fellow honorary Berzatto relative who picks fights with Fak and gives him a hard time.
In seasons 1 and 2, Fak is one of the more consistently comedic characters in the cast of The Bear. He is often in good spirits and has a naturally funny and goofy disposition. One of the most hilarious bits in the whole series takes place in the otherwise intense Christmas episode in The Bear season 2, in which he and his brother Ted (Ricky Staffieri), dressed in matching outfits, try to first convince Uncle Jimmy (Oliver Platt) and, later, guest star John Mulaney’s character Stevie, to invest in their baseball card flipping business.
15 Funniest Scenes From The Bear, Ranked
The Bear recently won the Golden Globe for Best Comedy TV Series. While it’s undoubtedly a dramedy, these moments prove its comedic merits.
An Episode Or Arc Centered On Fak Would Be A Welcome Development For The Bear
The Bear has yet to include an episode in which Fak is the primary focus
Fak plays a pivotal role in the renovation of the titular restaurant and is present for some of The Bear‘s most anxiety-inducing scenes. However, there has yet to be an episode of The Bear centered around Fak‘s character. The Bear season 2 saw characters like Richie and Marcus (Lionel Boyce) getting episodes dedicated to the improvement of their craft, but Fak has still never been the focus of a storyline. Fak is definitely one of the characters that The Bear needs more of in season 3, and giving him more of an arc will boost the show’s comedy levels.
One way The Bear could give Fak more of an arc is by introducing more Fak family members in season 3. Only Neil and Ted have appeared onscreen in The Bear so far, but plenty more Faks have been mentioned. It’s also been implied that Francie Fak did something to Natalie “Sugar” Berzatto (Abby Elliott) that caused Sugar to resent the Fak sister and ban her from attending the friends and family opening night of The Bear. The Bear season 3 could include a flashback that explains the origins of Francie and Sugar’s beef and explores Fak’s character more.
